Planning an Outdoor Wedding

Outdoor weddings are so dreamy! There is something so romantic and beautiful about letting the beauty of the outdoors be the backdrop for your special day. An outdoor wedding is not easy to pull off - it can be a downright logistical nightmare, especially here in Texas! Here are some tips to help you battle the many seen and unforeseen outdoor elements.

Back Up Plan

Always have a back up plan for the weather! Here at Gathering Oaks, we recommend a tent. We do have a new pavilion available for coverage on our courtyard, but if you're wanting to use the land, you'll need a backup tent in case the weather doesn't cooperate. You'll want to have a tent rental company on call, we have some wonderful vendors that we can refer you to. Texas weather is so unpredictable, and you can never truly know what will happen, so a tent will at least give you a little coverage. Between heat waves, cold fronts, and floods, Texas is no place to just wing it. The ideal outdoor wedding location has an indoor location waiting just in case, like our Gathering House or Whispering Vines room.

Time and Temperature

When picking a wedding date, be sure to pick a date and time where the temperature does not leave your guests melting in the sun or freezing. In Waco, the fall months of October and November and the spring months of March to May offer the most ideal temperatures for an outdoor wedding.

Even with choosing an ideal time to have your outdoor wedding you have to be prepared for unseasonable weather changes. If a heatwave threatens to ruin your outdoor wedding dreams, be prepared with the following tips:

  • Have bottled water that guests can grab on the way to their seat.

  • Print your wedding program on a fan so that guests can cool themselves.

  • Keep the ceremony short and sweet!

In that same vein, if a cold front comes through be prepared by having blankets for your guests. In addition, consider renting or buying heat lamps, so your guests can dine and dance in comfort. We also provide propane fire pits that your guests will sure to enjoy having a seat by.

Decor

Let our property and nature shine. You booked an outdoor property for a reason, don't let it hide behind all the wedding decor. Instead, enhance what's already there! Try hanging lanterns or floral hoops from our great Oak trees. We have beautiful string lights, but don't be afraid to add more or even some candlelight to let those night skies shine! You don't need to spend a ton of money on decor items for an outdoor wedding because it already speaks for itself.

Farm tables best fit our rustic nature and really bring out our natural beauty! Guests also enjoy the idea of being seated with everyone else joined by the Bride and Groom.

Making It Uniquely Yours

Our venue is really just the beginning stage of your beautiful wedding. It sets the picture of what your wedding can truly look like! Our nature, courtyards, covered pavilion, Oak trees, and peaceful atmosphere is really just a blank slate for what you can do with your vision. You can really make our venue come to life and we hope you love it just as much as we do!
